Professor Laicey Whikam strolled down the cobblestone street. The fallen leaves crunched under her feet. It was her first day back at Hogwarts. She'd returned to her alma matter as a professor at the headmaster's request. She'd spent the day in her office - the one that had most recently belonged to Professor Flitwick. Being back in the castle brought back so many memories of her own time here. Deciding that she needed an escape from the painful thoughts, Laicey made her way out of the castle and down to Hogsmeade Village for a drink. Not wanting to have to endure the glances of her fellow professors, some that she had known as a child, Laicey deicded that the Hogs Head was safer a destination than the Three Broomsticks.
Walking through the door of the bar, Laicey lowered the hood of her cloak and shook her hair out. She glanced around the room uninterestedly. Then she noticed him. Her heart dropped into the pit of her stomach, and gripped ahold of her ribs painfully. She almost couldn't brethe as she looked on to not only her old classmate, but her old friend. The one person she least expected to find in the bar. Remus Lupin.
Unable to move herself from the doorway, Laicey struggled to breathe. Her thoughts swam in her head, mixing memories of the laughter and tears that she had shared with their group of friends. Most prominently, memories of the late Sirius Black - thoughts of whom she had fled all of the way to France to escape.
As she fought to let out the breath that was stuck in her chest, Laicey caught the all too familiar gaze of Remus. Not knowing how else to react, she nodded in his direction, attemping in vain to keep her overly expressive face from betraying the hurt that was surely splayed across it.

Remus had been sat in the Hogs Head, prefering it for his refuge rather than the Three Broomsticks as he was less likely to run into anyone from Hogwarts, least of all another Professor. He knew they would lecture him about his drinking but he had stopped a little or rather cut down, yet not completely yet..he wasn't ready. He sipped his mead and glanced around the room at the new arrival and realized that he knew her, he offered her a faint smile as she looked at him. Concern spread across his face as he registered the hurt look upon hers. He considered whether or not to speak to her or to let her come to him or leave it all together. He watched her from his seat in the dark corner.

Laicey was stunned by Remus' friendly smile. Not that she expected him to be rude, but it had been many years since they'd last seen each other. Both had experienced their own suffering in that time - and though they hadn't spoken, both had experienced some of the same suffering. Laicey stood in the doorway for a moment longer, an internal war raging in her head. It was the classic "fight or flight" arguement. For once, Laicey decided to chose fight. Gathering her courage, she stopped at the bar, grabbing a brew from the bartender, and made her way over to the table where Remus was sitting. "It's been a while." she said, her voice trembling, and chin held high defiantly in true Laicey fashion.
She motioned to the seat across from him, but took it before waiting for a response, lowering herself into the chair. "I heard you were back at Hogwarts." she announced, taking a large gulp of the bitter liquid, barely making a face as it burned down her throat. "I didn't expect to run into you like this, though."

Remus watched her approach the table and nodded in reply that she could sit, he leant back in his chair and took another sip from his rather dirty glass, before lowering it slowly to reply to her, "it certainly has been a long time..and no, i er.. came in here for some peace and quiet as it were, no doubt you've probably heard from the other staff that i've been drinking? I know what they say.." he chewed his lip and played with the handle of his glass for a moment, before looking back upto her, "how have you been?"

Laicey shook her head, lifting her glass to her lips once more to take large gulp of her beverge. "No. Actually, I haven't spoken to any of the staff. But I .... erm.... I heard about Teddy." she wasn't sure what to say. She mentally scolded herself for bringing up what was sure to be the most painful memory that this man had. "I'm terribly sorry, Remus." she said sincerely. Of course, that was the last thing he probably wanted to hear; and her sympathy made no difference.
"I've been..." she said beginning to answer his question and change the subject, but got stuck at a loss of words. "alive." she finished, not knowing how else to term things. "I just got back from France, though I'm sure you've heard all of me running away from my problems from the rest of the staff." she said bitterly, turning his words back on him. The rest of the staff - or at least the ones she'd gone to school with - were surely talking behind her back. Everyone she knew did. That she were a coward that ran from what she could not face.
Laicey shook her head, attempting to clear her thoughts, as she finished the pint and motioned for the bartender to bring her another glass, which instantly appeared before her on the table. "To each his own," she toasted, lifting her glass in the air at no one in particular before taking another drink. Never in her life had she drank so much so fast, but at this point, the liquor felt good burning down her throat.
As her head began to swim a bit from the buzz that the alcohol was beginning to give her, Laicey turned once more to Remus. "It's all ****, you know." she fired at him. "All of it. All of the things that happened to our friends. ****. Complete and utter ****."

Remus chose to ignore her comment about Teddy, he just chewed his lip again and nodded. He took a slightly larger swig of his mead and returned his gaze to her, "actually i've not really spoken to many of the staff except for school business, i tend to keep to myself a little..so no, i've not heard?" he offered her a smile, "what have i missed?" He couldn't help but smile slightly as she started swearing about what had happened and calling it all ****, "well..thats the way these things go i suppose" he gave her a studying glance before speaking once more, "erm.. i think that drinks starting to get to you a little? Maybe you should stick to pumpkin juice instead?"
